It’s never just a job.

The lessons you learn, are Valuable for the skills You’ll gain.

Working has always given me a sense of purpose. Of course not everybody enjoys getting up in the morning and slugging to get to work, however it has really helped me shape the impression I have of myself and the standards I hold. Being able to work and develop skills has been one of the most humbling and important experiences I have had in my life.

The skills are not just technical skills but people skills, life skills and social skills. Skills that go far beyond the job itself and skills that will stay with you wherever you go. I’m genuinely grateful for the lessons the jobs have taught me, even from the most humbling jobs I’ve had.

From working in McDonald’s, I’ve been forced to level up my skills quickly, especially when it comes to social skills. The pressure, the fast pace and the constant demand will totally throw you off course and push you out of your comfort zone whether you’re ready or not.

Every day you’re faced with all types of characters, whether they are happy, stressed, impatient, kind or even if they are angry or simply having a bad day (sometimes you’ll get the McDonald’s special and get all the characters within the same hour). You learn how to communicate clearly, stay calm under pressure and respond with empathy even when it isn’t easy.

Over time, you begin to understand people on a deeper level. You learn how moods shift, how small interactions can change someone’s day and how important patience and emotional control really are.

Everything you learn within your day to day life, work, education or even from your environment. There are lessons all around us and these exact lessons teach us resilience and how to adapt in different environments that no classroom could fully teach.

If someone walks away from that experience without learning something about human nature and the empathy you need to have in order to be able to relate or socialise with people you may or may not relate to well… then hey, I don’t know what to tell you, haha.

Have a good day – AK
